In 2023, Shipping Strategy undertook an ESG ratings system scoping exercise focused on shipping on behalf of an international ratings agency. We investigated potential customers, their pain points and challenges, and offered insights on what to include in the ratings and how to structure them.

In 2021 and 2022, SSL provided advice to an Innovate UK funded start up on commercialising its patented process for making carbon neutral synthetic fuels. We introduced the business to potential investors and customers & assisted in pitching the business to a UK city council funded premises where it could build and demonstrate a prototype.

We were co-founders in 2019 of Diversity Study Group, a peer-to-peer benchmarking service enabling shipping and energy companies to apply best practice with regard to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policies for hiring staff. Shipping Strategy build the database and surveys that drives the project and created the branding. Diversity Study Group was subsequently spun off as a separate limited company in 2022.

We provide training to clients on ESG issues. Customers have included ship managers, ship owners, fuel traders, investors, banks, and legal firms. Contact us (details at the bottom of this page) to receive course synopses and costs.

In 2023 we provided a low and zero carbon marine fuels market scoping exercise for an EU based fuel trader, informing them of current and forecast production volumes and locations; existing and planned storage facilities; policy support from governments; and shipping market sentiment about each of the fuels including LNG, bio-LNG, LPG, methanol (including e-methanol and biomethanol), ammonia, liquefied hydrogen, fuel cells, electrical storage systems and even nuclear power.

In 2022 and 2023 Shipping Strategy ran ESG for shipping workshops for an international professional services firm's maritime and energy clients. We covered the relevant IMO, EU and national regulations covering maritime GHG emissions. We introduced the main Social themes and best practice, especially around Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and seafarer welfare. We advised on governance developments especially for ship finance, including due diligence, know your customer and sanctions monitoring. We advised delegates on the EU Emission Trading Scheme process for onboarding shipping, guiding on the actions that ship owners should undertake to ensure compliance.

In 2021, we provided advisory services to the European Commission on LNG carrier shipbuilding capacity as part of a pre-merger review it was undertaking. We reviewed global yard capacity including the options for bringing a non-functional site back into operation to build the latest state-of-the-art low emission LNG vessels.

In 2021, Shipping Strategy created an investment strategy for a European asset manager, focusing on maritime assets with good ESG credentials including low-carbon fuels and low-emission vessels across different types from gas carriers to passenger ships. The client successfully established a fund and continues to operate.
